Where
to Stay-Padang Bai
A
bit closer to the beach on a busy street, Kembar Inn offers clean
rooms in a two-storey building. The room upstairs have better
views of the bay, with a small breakfast area tucked in a corner
to catch the morning breezes. The owner arranges guided tours
and trekking, and a masseur is available next door.
Where
to Eat – Padang bai

There
are many inexpensive restaurants and cafes in Padangbai. Warung
Pantai Ayu on Silayukti Beach offers a good Balinese menu for
Rpl5-25,000. The small Dewi café in front of Topi Inn provides
a quiet place for a fresh drink and quick snacks for Rp10-15,000.
Where
to Stay – Manggis and Buitan
Hollywood
stars like to patron the Amankila, an exclusive, US$1000-a-night
resort located above the ocean before Manggis. The rest of us
can choose to spend between S$20 and 100 in one of the charming
boutique hotels or home stays of Manggis and Buitan, outside the
main tourist area of Candidasa. There is still a beach on this
part of the coast, although it is mostly grey sand and pebbles,
and is sometimes polluted by the tankers serving the oil storage
station in the bay.
Lumbung
Damuh: from Trash to Paradise
This
romantic gem features bungalows in form of lumbung or granaries,
nestled in a dense grove of coconut and banana trees. Tastefully
decorated bathrooms make you want to spend the morning under the
shower. Yet this would be a waste of your time, for Tania and
Lempot, your hosts, are always ready to take you around to discover
the hills, waterfalls, and rural culture of east Bali .

The
home stay is named after Lempot's grandfather. A trader of all
sorts, he acquired the land from a Chinese merchant, who bartered
it for a load of opium. Don't fantasize about the content of your
breakfast, though. All you're going to get is a very legal, yet
wonderful choice of homemade pancakes, fried rice, toast, or fruit
salad.
