Where
to Stay – Candidasa
A
Non – Violent Hope at Gedong Gandhi Ashram The creation of this
special place in 1970 was the long held dream of its founder,
the late Ibu Gedong Bagus Oka, a remarkable woman well-known internationally
for her work on interfaith and women's issues. Neatly described
as “an on-going experiment in simple, nonviolent living”
the community embodies the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. There are
about 30 members of various faiths and origins, although most
are young people from poor families of rural Bali .

Visitors
sympathetic to the ashram's aims are welcome in the guest accommodations,
a few simple, run down bungalows in a wide coconut grove
stretching out to the sea. Excellent vegetarian meals can be shared
with members and other guests. Volunteers are welcome, living
the life of the ashram, participating in prayers, yoga, or meditation,
or lending a hand to daily chores ranging from peanut harvesting
to maintaining the facilities. Guests have to follow a few rules:
no smoking or - alcoholic drinks within the ashram, and unmarried
couples can't share a room. The library has an exceptional colection
of volumes on non-violence. Temple visits, trekking, sailing,
and snorkelling can always be arranged. Otherwise, take
time out, absorb the ashram's routine, and just “be” without expectations.
