Ubud
– What to Do
ARMA:
The Agung Rai Museum of Art
ARMA
was created in the 1980s by the young collector Anak Agung of
Peliatan. Its grand scale reflects the style in fashion during
the economic boom of Seharto's late New Order. The four large
galleries, connected by gardens with ornamental ponds, are the
venue of both permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as
a book

Shop
and a reference library.
The
museum features a quality collection of classical and modern Balinese
paintings, including notably the fomous Calonarang, painted by
Walter Spies during his first visit to Ubud. Visit the upper floor
of the northern pavilion for a fine collection of classic Balinese
paintings on permanent display.
Meet
the Pengosekan Community of Artists
Peinter
Dewa Nyoman Batuan and his friends have been committed to Balinese
Culture since the 1970s. The peculiar style known as "Fauna
and Flora" evolved there at the and of the 1980s.
Applied
to carved decorative items such as mirror and picture frames,
the Pengosekan style had a worldwide commercial success -
yet Pak Nyoman Batuan has not turned into a businessman. As an
artist and philosopher, he goes on with the work of his life,
painting cosmological mandalas, and is always happy to show
the galleries to visitors. Together with friends, he offers lessons
in painting, woodcarving, Balinese music, and dance.
