Ubud
– What to Do
Another
way to enjoy Mt Batur's crater while avoiding the throngs of guides
in Toyabungkah is start with I Gede Mangun, an experience and
friendly guide to the area. He manages Bali Sunrise Trekking from
a small art shop near Batang Waru Restaurant, on Jl. Dewi Sita.
The trek along the ridge of the vast crater, above Songan and
Trunyan, is awesome.
A
Swarm of Wings at the Bali Bird Park
Walking
amidst trees surrounding by rare birds from Bali , Java, and Papua
is an unforgettable experience, especially for kids. The Bali
Bird Park ( Taman Burung ) shelters a rich collection of feathered
species, many of them endangered in their natural habitat. While
the rarest birds are kept in the cages, many other fly around
in large enclosures reaching up to the treetops. One of them is
equipped with a boardwalk leading you high into the trees' canopies.

In
addition to a vast collection of Indonesian birds, primarily from
the province of Papua , the Bali Bird Park hosts an impressive
array of colorful species from Latin America , China , Africa
, and Australia . Spectacular Indonesian birds include the rare
Palm Cockatoo (the large Cockatoo species); the Golden Neck Cassowary
(one of the large birds in the world); the Melayan Great Rhinoceros
Hornbill, the king Bird of Paradise; and the highly threatened,
endemic Bali Starling. Wild species, such as the iridescent blue
Javanese Kingfisher are also known to visit the park.
The
Park has informative labels about the birds; important information
about current populations of endangered species is also provided.
To preserve some of this wonderful diversity for figure generations,
the Bali Bird Park has set up a foundation dedicated to the preservation
of the Bali Starling, Bali 's only endemic bird. The foundation
breeds the birds in captivity before releasing them into the wild.
