The
Best of Bali
In
the meantime, the first generation of beach combersw discovered
with awe the enless waves of Kuta Beach . In 1936, an America
n couple built the Kuta Beach Hotel, a few bamboo and thatch bungalows
between the palm grove and the beach. Surving and backpacking
tourism was born.
In
the 1960s, after the turmoil of World War II and Indonesian independence,
Sanur Beach , with its quite waters protected by reefs, became
the focus of tourism development. Soekarno, the fla mboyant president
of the newly independent republic, inspired by Soviet-style modernism,
built the bland high-rise Bali Beach Hotel on the north end of
Sanur. Five star tourism was born. It later found its best expression
in the tourism complex of Nusa Dua.

Tourist
arrival increased with the official inauguration of the international
airport in 1969. After 1985, a wave of airline deregulation and
devaluation of the national currency made Indonesia a cheaper
destination. Kuta extended to the north, merging with Legian and
Seminyak, and turned ino a carnival of branded surf wear shops
and fake Rolex vendors, backpackers' home stays and del uxe hotels,
along with a mind – blowing quantity of restaurants, pubs, and
nightclubs.
The
most dedicated surfers left Kuta's crowded beach for the Challenging
waves of the arid Bukit Peninsula to the south. Meanwhile, tourists
in search of culture and authenticity flocked to Ubud, turning
this peaceful village into a buzzing hub of handicraft markets,
painting galle ries, organic restaurants, rice field home stays,
and boutique hotels.
The
Pround Kingdoms
The
Kingdom of gianyar is home to some of Bali 's most ancient and
holiest sites, including the “Moon of Pejeng”, a 2,000-year-old
bronze drum, the Goa Gajah hermitage at Bedulu, and the royal
tombs at Gunung Kawi. Its history reflects the complex struggles
between lineagesw that have shaped Bali 's history over the centuries.
