Klungkung
Opened
in 2001, the Kamasan Art Center offers several culture programs
lasting one to several days, giving visitor a change to practice
the arts. Every afternoon, adults and children come to the centre
for regular practice Of gamelan, dance, silver craft, or painting.
Although Kamasan painting tends to be dominated by men, the art
centre also supports women artists. Besides painting, it is so
possible to visit the silver craft studio (bokor), and see bullet-carving
artists.
Gunarsa
Museum of Classical and Modern Art
This
museum, also known by its former name, Museum Seni Lukisan Klasik
Bali , was founded by Dr. Nyoman Gunarsa, a well-known Balinese
painter. His paintings in brisk, lively lines and bright colours,
inspired by Balinese dancer, theatre, and daily life are displayed
in the western building, with works by other contemporary
gathered an impressive collection of classical pieces salvaged
from temples being renovated, or purchased abroad to be brought
back to Bali – all this, according to the painter, as part of
his bhaktiyoga , or service, to the world of art. The main building
displays stone and wood statues, as well as magnificent classical
paintings, mostly from the 17th to 19th centuries. The museum
also harbors a collection of gamelan instrument, and finances
a music and dance school for about a hundred local children. The
shrill sound of their practice fills the air of the roomy buildings
during the afternoon.

Gongs
at Tihingan
From
the Gunarsa Museum , follow the lovely country road for 3km 11
to the quiet village of Tihingan , where craftsmen make traditional
gong instruments. Small shop packed along the road display gongs
in various sizes,

well as other crafts. Ask for a quick glance at the workshops,
hidden behind the shops, to see traditional stoves and other manual
tools used to produce the instrument.
Work
by local artists can be purchased in the Kamasan showroom; as
well as good commercial reproductions on small cloths. Buy
directly in Kamasan to support the artists.
The
museum is at the western entrance o f Klungkung, behind the Trimurti
statue surrounded by policemen statues.
Situated
on the inter island trade route, Klungkung is great for shopping.
In the centre o f town is a huge, covered, old-style marketplace,
the largest in Bali - a real people's market. There you'll find
basketry, and songket or ikat textiles. Along the main street
(JI. Diponegoro), a row of sou venir shops sells textiles,
paintings, and carvings.
