The
busy streets of Klungkung and the nearby villages of craftsmen
and painters are perfect for an immersion in the best of Bali
's arts and history.
Where
to Stay
Most
travelers pass quickly through Klungkung, and the town has only
a couple of places to stay. Culture lovers will feel at home in
the family compound of the
Kamasan
Art Center , amidst a community of painters and craftsmen (see
below, What to Do). The owner, Ida Bagus Wijana, guide visitors
around the artists' studios. Ask to follow to the night market,
or to the temple to experience Bali nese rituals.

Where
to Eat
Several
small stalls are located in the centre of the town near the Kerta
Gosa, serving local food for Rp10 -20,000. Taste the spicy food
of the warungs at the night market. Mingling with local eaters
in a friendly atmosphere.
What
to Do – Arts and History at Taman Gili
Built
in 1710, the Taman Gili ( Island Garden ) complex is the last
remnant of the splendour of the old kingdom of Klungkung. Located
in the heart of town, it house the splendid painted ceilings of
the Kerta Gosa, the Bale Kambang (floating pavilion) and the Semarapura
Museum . The rest of the complex was destroyed during the puputan
sacrificial war against the Dutch in 1908.
