World of Wonders
Travelers
in search of nature wonders and living culture will fall in love
with east Bali . Following the coastal road from the south, start
first with a visit to Klungkung , the historical capital to Bali
, to get acquainted with its vibrant artistic legacy - you may
even spend one or several nights in the heart of the Kamasan arts
centre.
The
next stop may be in one of the villages stretching from Padangbai
to Candidasa . Despite a bit of tourism development, this coastline
retains a relaxed atmosphere, and is a good base to explore the
charming countryside. Padangbai, a quiet harbour with inexpensive
accommodation, is the departure point of the ferries to Lombok
and Nusa Penida. Like Lovina in the north, Candidasa has suffered
from unplanned tourism development in the 1980s, and lost most
of its beach when its coral reef was mined to build hotel, It
is now a quiet resort with good accommodation in all price ranges,
plenty of restaurants and tourist facilities. Just before Candidasa,
travelers may stay in one of the homestyle accommodations in isolated
beachside villages between Manggis and Buitan.

Further
east of Candidasa, the road roams back into a hinterland of rice
terraces. Become immersed in rural life by staying in a friendly
homestay or guesthouse near Tirtagangga , where you can take a
dip in the royal baths, discover the local crafts, or trek endlessly
around the eastern reaches of Bali with local guides.
Less
than one hour to the northeast of Tirtagangga lies the enthralling
coastline of Amed,- a succession of black sand and pebble beaches
stretching from the actual village of Amed to Selang, at the easternmost
tip of Bali . Wedged against steep mountains, this coast offers
spectacular ocean views, total peace, and fantastic snorkeling
or diving. Amed is also a perfect base to explore the nearby dive
sites of Tula mben and its exceptional ship wreck. Under the burnt
slopes of Mt Agung, the village of Tulamben itself has few attractions
other than its ocean depts, so only dedicated divers will overnight
there.
