Balinese
painters
Their
work is found in profusion in the art shops lining the streets
of Central Ubud , as well as in the large village of Batuan
near Sukawati, and smaller villages around Ubud, such
as Penestanan to the west and Keliki
to the north, which specialises in very small paintings.
Artisanal painters often work collectively under a master, whose
studio is usually open to visitors. An example is Ngurah K.K.,
one of the original practitioners of the “Young Artist” school
founded by the Dutch painter Arie Smit.
His
studio is in Campuhan , just uphill from Tjampuhan
Hotel on the other side of the road. Others are Dewa Batuan in
Pengosekan and Ketut Budiana in Padangtegal.
In these two painters' villages, one has only to
wander through the gate of any house compound with a sign in front
of it to make great discoveries.

Contemporary
Balinese art may be found in several galleries around Ubud. They
show works by artists from all over Southeast and East Asia ,
and by Westerners living in the region. The most prominent are

Balinese) on JI. Sriwedari 2B, Taman Kelod; Galeri Sembilan
Pengosekan; and the conspicuous-looking Gaya
Fusion of the Senses in Sayan, with its huge double
staircase leading to a smart restaurant. The Fine Art Gallery
at the Alila Ubud Hotel in Kedewatan also holds
regular exhibitions of regional artists.
