Amlapura
- Tirtagangga
A
mere 6km from Candidasa, the road leaves the coast and heads towards
Amlapura , also called Karangasem, after the
name of the district of which it is the capital. A few kilometers
to the north of town, Tirtagangga , with its
exquisite royal water gardens , is a great area
to relax.
It
has a wide choice of places to stay that are easy to access but,
being close to the road, can be noisy during the day. The nearby
villages of Ababi and, a bit further away, Temega
, offer more tranquility and a good choice of friendly
home stays amidst vast rice fields. The surrounding verdant hills
and the nearby Mt Seraya (1175m) are perfect for trekking, with
good local guides available in Tirtagangga.
Where
to Stay – Amlapura and Around

Travelers
obliged to spend the night in town may stay at Villa Amlapura
, which offers a row of clean rooms in a narrow yard
with an attached cafe. Expect noise from the road heading the
bemo terminal and the market.
Outside
Amlapura, travelers who want to be near the coast will enjoy Irene's
Villa , with two spacious bamboo and thatch-roofed
villas which can host four persons each in front of a charming
garden. You can order meals from the friendly staff, or eat in
the neighboring restaurants. Weaving or cooking classes can
be arranged.
