Amed Beach

Most hotels are concentrated along the coast in a few villages, the first one of importance being Amed proper, followed by smaller Jemeluk . This part of the coast is relatively flat, and the beach, more than a hurdred metres wide in some places, is used for traditional salt panning. With the mighty cone of Mt Agung always in that sight, the landscape has an eerie quality, especially when the late afternoon sun lends a golden shine to the square piles of coconut trunks and the conic baskets used for salt water collection

After Jemeluk, the coast gets narrower and the road winds through Bunutan and Lipah , where quite a few small hotels have developed over the last ten years. Travellers who prefer total isolation can push on towards Selang and Aas, enjoying the views of jukung boats lined up along every bay as the road climbs above the sea amidst scant grasses, bushes, and rocks.

Taste the Salt of the Earth at Hotel Uyah

This charming place has spacious, well-decorated rooms lined around a small pool, each with its own terrace offering a moon-like view of the salt panning beach, stretching for a good hundred metres towards the sea. Great food is served at the Cafe Garam.

Hotel Uyah strives to be an “eco-hotel”, pre serving the environment while making guests happy. The facilities are built to save energy with a natural ventilation system and warm water supplied from a locally-made solar heater. The hotel's staff clean the beach regularly, and limit plastic waste by offering to refill your bottles from theirs containers of mineral water. Hotel Uyah (“The Salt Hotel” in Balinese) supports the local salt farmers, helping them to sell their produce to tourists, restaurants, and exporters at a higher price than what they get normally on the market. The friendly staff have been trained to guide tourists around the salt fields, and explain everything you ever wanted to know about traditional salt making.
