What to Do – Impossible Surf at the Bukit

Turning off the Unggasan - Uluwatu road, a battered road passes through the deserted complex of Pecatu Indah towards the coast, finally splitting into two small paths leading to idyllic white - sand beaches. The right turn leads to Balangan, known for its serene surroundings and perfect soft lefthanders. It's possible to swim in the cove, but watch our for big surfs. A few small warungs trim the shore. The left road turn leads to the aptly named Dreamland. The surf along this shore provide short right handers, longer lefts, and occasional barrels to any surfer's delight. Once in the water, you may be surprised by the rare company of a dugong dugong (sea cow). - Just a stroll down from Dreamland, Bingin is known for its consistent and finely tunnelled barrels.

The beach is named after a large banyan tree, or beringin , which once grew on the cliff - an unlikely spot for this species, which is not fond of ocean winds. Owing to its perfect waves and shorts lefthanders, Bingin is more crowded than other areas. Non - surfers can swim in the crook of a small lagoon. Meanwhile, Impossibles , down the coast from Bingin, churns longer and speedier peaks for right – handers. The swelling surf, however, makes it hard to swim. Climb up to the cliff just after the parking lot, where you'll be greeted by an awesome ocean vista, stretching from Impossibles to Padang-Padang.

Padang – Padang is often referred to as ”the pipeline”, owing to its great left - hander. Its peaks are reserved to the best wave riders. Another famous brea k for skilled surfers is Uluwatu, accessed through Suluban beach, 2km away from the Uluwatu temple. This is where Albert Falzon filmed “an ocean stacked with barreling lefthanders to peel forever and ever”. A relaxed walk on the beach is possible by climbing down the cliff via a small pathway from the temple, though swimming is unquestionably dangerous. As dusk starts to fall yourself surrounded by troops of persistent monkeys which can make your climb backunpleasant.
